Jomfrunuten
The Jomfrunuten hike is a perfect way to experience Finse’s wild nature in just a few hours.
Ideal for a day trip, a conference break, or a quick escape from work, this route offers a refreshing taste of the wilderness without requiring a full day.
The hike
The hike begins through Finse village, where your guide shares local history before leading onto the DNT trail. The initial section is rocky and a little steep, but it quickly eases as you reach the upper valley.
The nature
Leaving the marked trail, you enter the open Jomfrunuten area, where the landscape shifts to a stark, almost lunar terrain of low Arctic plants and sculpted rock. From here, you can either head to a small summit overlooking Finse or explore the quieter, wilder backside of the mountain.
The descent winds through rock fields and moss before rounding the mountain’s shoulder, where the view suddenly opens to reveal Hardangerjøkulen glacier, Finse valley, and the village below.
Though short, this hike leaves you feeling calm and reconnected and very ready for post-hike hot chocolate and a bolle at Hotel Finse 1222 or Finsehytta DNT cabin!
