Location: The heart of the Southern Norwegian wilderness

Imagine stepping off a train and finding yourself immersed in a world untouched by time into the remote mountain village of Finse, perched on the edge of the mighty Hardagarjøkulen Glacier.

The only way to reach this hidden gem is by train, foot or bike. As you arrive, the crisp mountain air fills your lungs and the vast alpine tundra stretches endlessly before you, the mountain like shimmering in the bright light.

This is a landscape that stirs the soul and ignites the imagination; the very place where legendary Polar explorers once trained for their epic journeys into the unknown

Glacier Walking: A journey through time

Hardagarjøkulen, the glacier at Finse, is a living relic; nearly 5,000 years old.

With the help of your guide, we put on crampons, harness, and ice axe and make a rope team to step onto the ancient blue ice.

Feel the wonder as you explore crevasse fields, peer into mysterious moulins, and witness the glacier’s secrets firsthand.

Walking on this otherworldly terrain, with the sun illuminating the ice, is a truly magical experience and feels like stepping onto another planet.

Safety is our top priority, and our expert guides ensure every step is as secure as it is awe-inspiring.

Biking: Pedalling through a dreamscape

Cycle the legendary railworkers’ old trail, now a world-renowned cycling route.

Glide through a landscape of stark beauty of rocky outcrops, sweeping valleys, and views that will take your breath away.

Along the way, pause for coffee and cake at a charming railway worker's cottage, turned museum and café, where peace and tranquility reign.

We will take time to explore, picnic, and soak in the serenity. Before catching the mountain train to whisk us back to Finse.

Back in Finse, visit the Rallarmuseet railway museum and let your guide bring history to life, sharing tales of the village’s colorful past.

Hiking: Visit the glacier's secret side

On our final day, we set out on a memorable hike to an iceberg lake, where the glacier calves into crystal-clear waters.

This is a full and adventurous day. It's about 8 km one way on a trail with some ascent. At the last rise we are rewarded with vistas that are both humbling and awe-inspiring.

We walk at a slow, steady pace, savouring every moment. There’s a bittersweet beauty here, knowing these ancient ice formations are vanishing from our world.

Our guides, with years of experience, nurture a warm, encouraging atmosphere, giving you space to connect with nature and reflect on the journey.

Accommodation & Food: A mountain home away from home

Rest and recharge at Finsehytta, one of Norway’s largest and most beloved mountain cabins.

The lounge boasts breathtaking views, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Rooms are cozy and shared, fostering a sense of camaraderie. Modern facilities are shared as well, adding to the authentic mountain experience.

Dinner is a highlight. We gather with fellow travellers for a three-course feast of hearty, healthy Norwegian cuisine, lovingly prepared and introduced by your hosts, Sonja and Rune.

Don’t miss the chance to sample Rune’s handcrafted beer, a local legend in its own right and brewed in Finse at 1,223 metres above sea level!

Difficulty:

Moderate. You need a bit of fitness but you don't need to be a super-hero.

How much activity?

Each day we will probably be active for 6-8 hours. We will hike 12-16km on the glacier day and a bit more on the hiking day.

We will bike around 35km. We take it gently and have all day to stop and be present.

Consecutive activity

We have three days back-to-back with hiking or biking every day. And remember, we are not in a rush!

Skill Level

Beginners are completely welcome (and encouraged!) for hiking and glacier walking. Our only request is that you have ridden a bicycle on bumpy tracks before.

Weather

Norwegian weather can be wild, especially up here in the mountains. It can bring heavy rain and extremely high winds. Of course your guide will adjust the plan in response to the weather but â€‹be prepared mentally and with the right equipment so we can still go out and enjoy some form of activity in even the worst weather.

Our attitude for weather is to hope for the best but we prepared for the worst. Just in case.
