Store Finsenuten

Store Finsenuten stands 1,599 metres above sea level, offering sweeping views over the glaciers and mountains around Finse. The summit feels remote and rewarding, yet it’s still so easily accessible from Finse village.

The hike

Starting from the open plateau near Finse, the trail gradually climbs through a raw and elemental terrain of rock, snow patches, and glacial remnants. As we gain elevation, we see different species of alpine plants at our feet and slowly the wide views of Finsevatnet lake and surrounding valleys start to appear. As we reach the summit we are rewarded with magnificent views of the glacial ice cap, Hardangarjøkulen and its three outlet glaciers pouring off its North side.

The nature

Seeing the extent of the glaciers bring a real sense of stillness and wonder. We descend down the wide ridge of Store Finsenuten, picking our way through interesting landforms and ground textures. As we descend we explore the giant boulders left behind by glaciation. As we return to the tiny village of Finse, you'll know you have experienced a very special place in nature.
